Vevo.com sending to Hell MTV [Media War]

December 9, 2009

Singer Rihanna attends the launch of VEVO, the world’s premiere destination for premium music video and entertainment at Skylight Studio on December 8, 2009 in New York City.

An advertising blitz by Vivendi’s Universal Music Group and Sony Music Entertainement, two music giants alon with Abu Dhabi Media Co. hoping that their new website, Vevo.com, will finally send to hell any idea that MTV is a place for top flight videos. The idea is to create an MTV for the digital age, a music site where all the latest and archived videos can be found.

As music companies are loosing revenues and profits at a rapid tick due to the combined impact of falling sales CDs, online piracy and the lack of creativity.Recording companies are experimenting with new ways of distributing their music online through ventures such as VeVo.It will show videos for free, supported by ads. While Google Inc’s Youtube has been an important music discovery tool fro the record companies, it has failed to attract premium advertising dollars. But Vevo just landed the sort of blue-chip brands that have shied away from Youtube because of the high production avlue of the videos, and the top flight artists they feature.

Indeed, Vevo launched with the support of nearly 20 new advertising partnerships, including names like McDonald’s Corp, MasterCard Inc, AT& T Inc. and Nissan Motor Co.’s Infiniti brand of luxury cars. These advertisers will pay a near premium rate around of $20 to $45 for every 1,000-page views, Vevo Chief executive  Rio Caraeff said in the interview.

Over the next year , as current licensing deals expire , Vevo’s player will gradually replace online videos that are on artist Web sites and other online destination such as AOL.The Vevo Web site and player will also have links to allow viewers to buy songs from Amazon.com or Apple Inc.’s iTunes.Links to artist merchandise will point to Bravado, Universal’s online retailing company.

YouTube’s Top Money Makers Are Record Labels

November 21, 2009

Music videos from Sony and Universal on YouTube have more advertising sold against them than any other group, according to analysis from TubeMogul.Below is an approximation of the daily share of YouTube’s monetized views based on the number of videos that carry ads in YouTube’s daily top 100 most-viewed.

This is why Sony, Universal, and YouTube are teaming up to launch Vevo, the big web music video site, December 8th. According to TubeMogul, 3.94% of YouTube’s daily views come from the two labels.

This also shows how broad YouTube’s base of publishers is, since only two represent more than 1% of the daily share of monetized views.

Oprah Winfrey to end her talk show in 2011 [25yrs feel right in my bones]

November 20, 2009
2009 AFI Film Festival Premiere of Precious

Oh My ! All mom-and-pop and unemployed population are already on tears left alone without any idea of an another messy, juicy talk show they can switch on.The Oprah Winfrey Show is to end in September 2011 after more than two decades on air, the production company behind the programme has said.A spokesman for the star’s Harpo production company would not say why Winfrey had decided to quit, but said she would discuss it on Friday’s show.

Winfrey is expected to focus instead on the launch of her own TV channel.

She already runs a satellite radio station, Oprah Radio, with presenters including Dr Maya Angelou and sex therapist Dr Laura Berman.

“The sun will set on the Oprah show as its 25th season draws to a close on 9 September 2011,” Tim Bennett, president of Winfrey’s Harpo production company, wrote in a letter to affiliates.

The Oprah Winfrey Show, currently syndicated in 145 countries, has transformed the star into a cultural phenomenon.

The introduction of Oprah’s Book Club helped authors whose novels were selected become bestsellers overnight, and Winfrey’s support for US President Barack Obama was seen as crucial to his presidential election campaign.

Winfrey’s empire also includes a magazine, books and, from 2011, a cable TV network.

OWN: The Oprah Winfrey Network is a joint venture between Winfrey and Discovery Communications and is set to replace the Discovery Health Channel in more than 70 million US homes.

The end of the programme will be a blow to distributor CBS, which earns a percentage of licensing fees – estimated to be worth hundreds of millions of dollars – from the more than 200 local ABC TV stations across the US that broadcast it.

Many stations also built their schedules around Winfrey’s show, using it to promote other programmes while also delivering a large audience to their local news programming.
