The Chicago emcee Lupe Fiasco speaks

November 14, 2009
Coachella Valley Music & Arts Festival 2009 - Day 3

Lupe Fiasco has been on a tear lately.  Once staunchly on the wrong side of leaks and giveaways, the Chicago emcee who once printed a list of reasons why he’s upset with the current leak-heavy music scene has been releasing a tirade of freestyles via blogs and websites.  The reason for Lupe’s surge in activity can be traced to MTV’s Hottest Emcees list of 2009, and Cornell Westside’s (as he’s been dubbed) absence from the list. But for Lupe, inclusion on MTV’s list wasn’t just about ego or the current standing of Lupe Fiaso. As he told us during an exclusive interview,

“For me, another part was ‘I gotta make that list because the kids have to see that you don’t have to do this to be successful.’ If you look at it and 90% of it is negative, it’s like we gotta have something positive on the list.  That’s not taking shots at anybody.  All those people are my homeboys, but if we come down to the nitty gritty and what’s effecting the streets, you got kids getting beat to death in the streets. You really have to take the responsibility to step up and be like, ‘I have to show my success.  I have to work this hard.  I have to be to be looked at as this top ranked dude and top ranked Emcee.  It’s not because I want the glory and fame, but so kids can have a different role model or choice of role model.’  If we’re excluded from that, the top pop culture thing for Hip Hop is devoid of anything positive, oh naw, we got to go to work.  The conscious backpackers have to go to the club and go to work.”

Ryan Leslie’s new single “I Choosed You”

November 2, 2009
Michael Angel - Front Row - Spring 2010 MBFW

Here is a brand new track from Ryan Leslie titled I Choosed You, the cut will appear on Ryan’s upcoming new album Transition.Ryan doesn’t make crappy music that will get the label to invest millions on radio play, and ultimately end up irrelevant in 4 months.Ryan makes music that is timeless.  I don’t know if he will put up big sales numbers, but I do think he is really solidifying his brand.  I honestly believe that Ryan is here to stay, so I recommend that on November 3rd you go out, pick up that album, and get familiar. He’s not just some entertainer that sings and dances, he is an Artist. The album presentation has been so off the hook that he’ll do it again on November 4th at the Times Center in Manhattan. Also on the program a documentary-style film about the inspiration and the making of Transition that will offer a lens into Ryan’s mind and heart.

In “Cuba: Waiting for a Revolution” Adrian Baschuk travels to Cuba to examine the potential of a counter-revolution against a leadership that has been in power for 50 years. He’s agreed to be interviewed in the same fashion as Mariana, which means we need questions from you! Do you have questions about Cuba, Castro’s 50 year reign, or any of Adrian’s other work with Vanguard? You can post your question as a comment below, or as a tweet@current.

Joe: Signature, getting back to basics, and being single for a damn long time…

October 20, 2009

On july 14th, while the french were celebrating “Bastille Day, RnB singer Joe aka chocolate goddess released his latest baby :”Signature”.The singer, known for sensual love songs, drops the charm on “Sex Girl,” bluntly stating he “can’t help but want your sex, girl.” After hearing that sentiment, listeners will surely yearn for the more romantic Joe of old.

The 4 first songs seemed to me as typical slow jam without any creative sound edge and when its comes to the lyrics: it’s all about a girl, sexiness, love, love and you kinda feel bored not to mention annoyed.

Hopefully, as soon as you hit the songs -Miss My Baby,Come to get this,Metaphor,Worst Case Scenario- it’s hard to not feel Joe’s brand of richly textured and organic rnb vibes. At first sight, i couldnt figure out why i was so drawn to those songs, there was some hidden reason i couldn’t take it off repeat and then it hit me: Joe back in the 90s! This was the kind of jam with wich he hit the charts: juicy, damn tasty, you’re definetly digging him.

On the interview with SoulCulture he talks about his album signature, getting back to basics , and being single for a damn long time…
