November 20, 2009
2009 AFI Film Festival Premiere of Precious

Oh My ! All mom-and-pop and unemployed population are already on tears left alone without any idea of an another messy, juicy talk show they can switch on.The Oprah Winfrey Show is to end in September 2011 after more than two decades on air, the production company behind the programme has said.A spokesman for the star’s Harpo production company would not say why Winfrey had decided to quit, but said she would discuss it on Friday’s show.

Winfrey is expected to focus instead on the launch of her own TV channel.

She already runs a satellite radio station, Oprah Radio, with presenters including Dr Maya Angelou and sex therapist Dr Laura Berman.

“The sun will set on the Oprah show as its 25th season draws to a close on 9 September 2011,” Tim Bennett, president of Winfrey’s Harpo production company, wrote in a letter to affiliates.

The Oprah Winfrey Show, currently syndicated in 145 countries, has transformed the star into a cultural phenomenon.

The introduction of Oprah’s Book Club helped authors whose novels were selected become bestsellers overnight, and Winfrey’s support for US President Barack Obama was seen as crucial to his presidential election campaign.

Winfrey’s empire also includes a magazine, books and, from 2011, a cable TV network.

OWN: The Oprah Winfrey Network is a joint venture between Winfrey and Discovery Communications and is set to replace the Discovery Health Channel in more than 70 million US homes.

The end of the programme will be a blow to distributor CBS, which earns a percentage of licensing fees – estimated to be worth hundreds of millions of dollars – from the more than 200 local ABC TV stations across the US that broadcast it.

Many stations also built their schedules around Winfrey’s show, using it to promote other programmes while also delivering a large audience to their local news programming.

Brandy wanted to play Precious !

November 11, 2009
MTV TRL Presents Brandy, John Legend, And Justin Long

Actress Gabourey “Gabby” Sidibe is getting rave reviews for her portrayal as Claireece Precious Jones in Precious: Based on the Novel ‘Push’ by Sapphire. But before the 26-year-old newcomer was cast, another unlikely actress was thought of for the role.

Sapphire, the author whose novel inspired the much-buzzed-about film, told Entertainment Weekly about the many offers she received and eventually turned down to take her book to the big screen.

One of them came from a producer who thought R&B singer and “Moesha” star Brandy should play the obese, illiterate New York City teenager. “I remember this one producer told me that he had found Precious”and it was going to be Brandy,” a shocked Sapphire said. “Excuse me? I literally almost hung up on him.”

Filmmaker Lee Daniels (Monster’s Ball) eventually won the rights to make the movie, casting Sidibe as Precious and comedian Mo’Nique as her abusive mother, Mary Jones.

2009 Soul Train Awards

2009 Soul Train Awards - Show

Beyonce stunned on them after taking three top prizes at the ceremony : Best Female R&B/ Soul artist,Song of the Year : Single Ladies, I Am… Sasha Fierce : Album of the Year.

Neither of them desserving the price, i was bewildered by the fact that she lost out on the “ Prestigious Record of the Year “ tittle that went to Jamie Foxx for T-pain autotune collaboration” Blame it”.Is that a joke ? I mean are they really serious ?Then they wonder why the music industry nowadays lacks soul on the top of being a corporate piece of trash.

Meanwhile Keri Hilson was a double winner walking away with the Best New Artist award and Best collaboration for Knock You Down, her hit with Kanye West and Ne-yo.

Soul star Maxwell, who was nominated in four categories, only managed to win one, for Best Male R&B/Soul Artist, beating competition from the likes of Robin Thicke and Raphael Saadiq.

Angie Stone, Erykah Badu and Fantasia collaborated with rap pioneer Melle Mel to honour Khan, singing her hits Through the Fire and Tell Me Something Good.
They weren’t the only singers to bring the audience to their feet – Chico DeBarge, Boyz II Men, Johnny Gill and Estelle hit the stage with actress presenter Taraji P. Henson to belt out a medley of Motown hits to mark the label’s 50th anniversary.

The awards show, co-hosted by actor Terrence Howard, will air on U.S. TV on 29November (09).
