December 8, 2009

"Fela!" Broadway Opening Night - After Party

He’s never been one to hid his light under a bushel – but R&B king Jay-Z has pulled out all the stops to host a bling birthday party to remember.The 40 year-old celebrated by chartering two private jets to fly friends from New York to theDominican Republic party location.

And once there, Kanye West,Mary J BligeAlicia KeysP DiddyKate HudsonNe-Yo,M.I.A.Oprah Winfrey and Lil Wayne were treated to a gangster movie-themed night to remember.Meanwhile Gwyneth Paltrow and Coldplay’s Chris Martin sent video congratulations – but just one other invited guest, Tiger Woods, wasmissing from the crowd.

The whole event was based on the Al Pacino movie Scarface, with the rapper’s wife, Beyonce, and his mum, Gloria, proudly named as guests of honour. The favoured few tucked into a lavish dinner featuring canapés with caviar, all washed down with Dom Perignon champagne.

Kanye West and P Diddy both sang for their supper before Jay-Z and Alicia Keys added an impromptu version of Empire State of Mind. The night ended with fireworks and a 40s-style synchronised swimming display.

Sadly we can’t show you any photos of the shindig. Even the most famous faces present had to leave their mobile phones at the door to avoid anyone smuggling photos out.

Oprah Winfrey to end her talk show in 2011 [25yrs feel right in my bones]

November 20, 2009
2009 AFI Film Festival Premiere of Precious

Oh My ! All mom-and-pop and unemployed population are already on tears left alone without any idea of an another messy, juicy talk show they can switch on.The Oprah Winfrey Show is to end in September 2011 after more than two decades on air, the production company behind the programme has said.A spokesman for the star’s Harpo production company would not say why Winfrey had decided to quit, but said she would discuss it on Friday’s show.

Winfrey is expected to focus instead on the launch of her own TV channel.

She already runs a satellite radio station, Oprah Radio, with presenters including Dr Maya Angelou and sex therapist Dr Laura Berman.

“The sun will set on the Oprah show as its 25th season draws to a close on 9 September 2011,” Tim Bennett, president of Winfrey’s Harpo production company, wrote in a letter to affiliates.

The Oprah Winfrey Show, currently syndicated in 145 countries, has transformed the star into a cultural phenomenon.

The introduction of Oprah’s Book Club helped authors whose novels were selected become bestsellers overnight, and Winfrey’s support for US President Barack Obama was seen as crucial to his presidential election campaign.

Winfrey’s empire also includes a magazine, books and, from 2011, a cable TV network.

OWN: The Oprah Winfrey Network is a joint venture between Winfrey and Discovery Communications and is set to replace the Discovery Health Channel in more than 70 million US homes.

The end of the programme will be a blow to distributor CBS, which earns a percentage of licensing fees – estimated to be worth hundreds of millions of dollars – from the more than 200 local ABC TV stations across the US that broadcast it.

Many stations also built their schedules around Winfrey’s show, using it to promote other programmes while also delivering a large audience to their local news programming.

Michael Jackson’s This Is It grossed $101 million at the world-wide box office over five days, making it the highest-grossing concert film of all time. Sony Pictures paid $60 million to acquire the rights to the film, a behind-the-scenes documentary made from footage captured before the King of Pop’s death in June. This Is It dethrones Hannah Montana/Miley Cyrus: Best of Both Worlds Concert Tour as the top-grossing concert movie. That movie grossed more than $70 million world-wide when Walt Disney Co. released it last year. (Wall Street Journal)
